A farewell to Wayne Westner
The New Year started in a sad fashion with the news breaking of the tragic death of Wayne Westner in Pennington, on the South Coast. Westner, who operated a Golf College in the small golfing hub, was a 55 year old veteran of the Sunshine and European Tours. He won 2 SA opens, and an Alfred Dunhill Challenge representing South Africa. He had two European tour wins, at the Dubai Desert Classic in 1993, and the FNB Players Championship in 1996, but his most famous victory remains the World Cup of Golf, where he partnered Ernie Els to the trophy in Cape Town in 1996.
A noriously long hitter of the ball in his day, he also invented his own 'swing machine' to help with coaching.
Wayne Westner contributed greatly to South African golf, and our condolences go to his family and many friends on the Fairways of Kwazulu Natal.
